Batec. Spirit and Machete is a poetic documentary short film about the search for identity and the acceptance of one’s Blackness. Through a journey between Barcelona and the Dominican Republic, the director explores her family’s history, shaped by the 1937 genocide known as the Parsley Massacre and by the mysterious past of her grandmother.
The documentary reflects on how trauma and violence are passed down through generations, and questions whether the latter is merely a stereotype or a legitimate emotion within the history of a community marked by centuries of colonization, slavery, and diaspora.
